The safe quest order in Dragon's Dogma 2 so nothing is lost. Lists every missable side quest and the story points that quietly lock them out.
Quests in Order: Missable Quest List and Safe Route
Stop advancing the story while a region still has open side quests. Dragon's Dogma 2 closes doors at three main quests: Feast of Deception, A New Godsway, and The Guardian Gigantus. Clear each region's requests before its gate and almost nothing is lost. Entering the Unmoored World seals the save to that timeline for good.

- The rule is regional, not global: finish a town's quests before the main quest that leaves that town.
- Three gate quests matter. Everything else is free to do in any order.
- Escort and timed quests can also fail on their own if the NPC you are protecting dies.
- Back up your save before the last gate, because the true ending branch is irreversible.
The Main Quest Chain, In Order
The main quests run in a fixed sequence once you commit to them. This is that sequence, with the side-quest window each one leaves open. Quest names below follow the community and media-documented list; Capcom's own site does not publish a numbered chain.
| Order | Main quest | Side-quest window it opens or closes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Gaoled Awakening | Prologue. Nothing can be missed yet. |
| 2 | Tale's Beginning | First camp opens; tutorials and early field quests. |
| 3 | In Dragon's Wake | Melve area opens after the dragon attack. |
| 4 | Seat of the Sovran | Vernworth and Brant. Grab the Eternal Ferrystone here. |
| 5 | Monster Culling | Vernworth board quests keep unlocking. |
| 6 | Disa's Plot | The Ornate Box expires if you skip it before this stretch. |
| 7 | The Caged Magistrate | Castle and slums side threads stay open. |
| 8 | The Stolen Throne | Last comfortable window for most Vernworth quests. |
| 9 | The Nameless Village | Optional detour; do it before the coronation. |
| 10 | An Unsettling Encounter | Sets up the feast. Finish local quests now. |
| 11 | Feast of Deception | First hard gate. Locks several Verdant and Melve quests. |
| 12 | Nation of the Lambent Flame | Battahl opens. Battahl threads unlock in two waves. |
| 13 | Flickering Shadows | Second wave of Battahl quests becomes available. |
| 14 | Convergence | Political thread closes; finish Battahl requests. |
| 15 | A New Godsway | Second gate. The clock jumps and some travel is cut. |
| 16 | The Guardian Gigantus | Third gate at the top of the Moonglint Tower. Last chance. |
| 17 | Legacy | Branches to the ending. The Unmoored World branch is terminal. |
The order of quests 12 through 14 depends on which regions you have already opened, so treat the middle of the table as a shape rather than a strict count. The gates at 11, 15, and 16 do not move.

Rule One: Clear a Region Before Its Story Gate
Dragon's Dogma 2 does not warn you with a countdown. A gate quest completes, the NPCs who handed out the lost work stop offering it, and the quest disappears from your log without a failure notice.
So the working habit is simple. When you arrive in a new settlement, walk it fully, talk to everyone twice, and clear the local board before you touch the next main quest marker. The regions you need to sweep in this order are Melve, Vernworth, the Checkpoint Rest Town, Bakbattahl, and the Volcanic Island Camp.
Two mechanics make the sweep easier. Quest items can be duplicated as forgeries at the scrap shop in the Checkpoint Rest Town, so you can satisfy a hand-in without giving up the original. Gifting a vendor raises affinity and can unlock requests you would otherwise never see, with the pause menu's history tab recording what each NPC likes. Escorts run on the same system, since the target's survival decides completion.
If you are doing the sweep on a harder difficulty, order still matters more than build: Hard Mode changes the damage math but not the quest gates.
Gate 1: Feast of Deception Locks Several Vernworth Quests
Feast of Deception is the coronation chapter and the first point of no return. After it resolves, these Vernworth and Melve requests are the ones most consistently reported as unavailable:
| Quest | Giver or area | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| The Ornate Box | Roderick's Smithy, Vernworth | Expires once the Disa's Plot stretch is passed. |
| Vocation Frustration | Vernworth Vocation Guild | Talk to Klaus right after Seat of the Sovran. |
| The Arisen's Shadow | Merchant Quarter, Vernworth | Starts by roaming the city after Brant's quests. |
| Readvent of Calamity | Melve | Requires returning to Melve mid-chapter. |
| Nesting Troubles | Melve, from Lennart | Chained to the In Dragon's Wake aftermath. |
| Brothers Brave and Timid | Vernworth | Opens with Seat of the Sovran. |
| Home is Where the Hearth Is | Melve | Follows Trouble on the Cape. |
| Masked Correspondence | Vernworth | Reported to expire after the feast. |
Sources disagree on the exact full set, so assume anything in Vernworth or Melve is at risk. Your quest log is the authority on your own file.
Feast of Deception begins after An Unsettling Encounter and does not announce itself as a cut-off. If your Vernworth log shows anything unfinished, do it before you accept the next castle summon.
Gate 2: A New Godsway Advances the Clock
A New Godsway is the second gate. When it completes, the in-game clock jumps forward and parts of the map close off. Battahl quests that were waiting on the political threads, including Welcome to Battahl and Tensions on the Highroad, are the ones most commonly lost here, and travel to the Volcanic Island Camp becomes unreliable afterwards.
This gate is easy to trip because it feels like progress, not a boundary. Before finishing Convergence and moving into A New Godsway, sweep Bakbattahl and the highroad, and handle Volcanic Island Camp requests such as The Sotted Sage. Fast travel logistics matter once the clock moves, so place your Portcrystals deliberately and keep the Eternal Ferrystone ready; the mechanics are on the Eternal Ferrystone fast travel guide and the Portcrystal locations guide.
Gate 3: The Guardian Gigantus and the Unmoored World
The Guardian Gigantus, fought at the top of the Moonglint Tower, is the last chance to wrap up side content. After that fight the story runs into Legacy, which branches toward the endings. Choosing the true branch drops you into the Unmoored World, and that transition is the one that cannot be undone: your ordinary saves are replaced, and base-game quests are no longer completable.
The Unmoored World branch is terminal. Copy your save file before you climb the Moonglint Tower, so a missed quest never costs you a full playthrough. The file locations are covered in the save location and backup guide.
Capcom's update notes confirm the save system gained three slots per Arisen with separate autosave, interim, and inn-rest saves, which makes a clean manual backup much easier than it was at launch.

Time-Limited and Failure Quests
Not every missable quest is lost to a story gate. Some fail on their own. These are the ones that can end without you advancing the plot:
| Quest | Failure condition | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Prey for the Pack | The NPC Rodge dies during the quest | Quest lost, reward gone |
| Shadowed Prayers | The NPC Nadinia dies | Fails Candle in the Storm and Crossing in Shadow, and blocks buying the house in Bakbattahl |
| Every Rose Has Its Thorns, A Noble Exchange, Out of the Forest Into the Forge | Time-sensitive window closes | Lost without a story gate |
| Escort requests | Your escort target reaches zero health | Quest fails immediately |
Keep Wakestones on hand and switch them into your own inventory before escort runs, because a pawn holding the stone cannot revive an NPC you need. Dead field NPCs can be sent to a chapel in a major town, and some quests stay open until the character is revived, but relying on that is a gamble.
For pawn behavior during long escort routes, inclinations decide whether your party holds the line or wanders, which is worth setting up first; the pawn inclinations and specializations guide covers it.
Where the Dark Arisen Thread Fits
The Dark Arisen expansion adds a second Brant thread, separate from the base-game gates. It opens early from Vernworth and is not locked by Feast of Deception, so you can interleave it with the base campaign. The catch is power: expansion gear trivializes leftover base-game bosses, so doing it first turns the sweep into a formality.
The unstructured way to sequence both tracks:
- Reach Vernworth and take Seat of the Sovran so both Brant threads exist.
- Sweep Melve and Vernworth until the coronation gate is the only main quest left, running a first round of expansion gear first if you want the base sweep to be quick.
- Finish Feast of Deception, then sweep Battahl and the Volcanic Island Camp before A New Godsway.
- Handle the expansion's own content and climb the tower, backing up your save first.
Entry steps and the missing-quest workaround live on the DLC start walkthrough, the level and prep math is in the beginner checklist before Norgan, and region content is mapped in the Norgan region guide.
Finish one settlement completely rather than bouncing between regions. Quest triggers often depend on time of day, so a single committed pass catches offers that a scattered one misses.
FAQ
What is the point of no return in Dragon's Dogma 2? The final one is entering the Unmoored World through Legacy, because it permanently replaces your saves. The practical cut-off for side content is The Guardian Gigantus at the top of the Moonglint Tower.
Can I still do side quests after the coronation? Some, yes. Feast of Deception only removes a specific set of Vernworth and Melve requests. Plenty of Battahl and later content stays open, so check your log rather than assuming everything is gone.
I failed an escort quest, is it gone forever? That individual attempt is, unless you reload an earlier save. Escort requests repeat and lead between the same towns, so you lose the reward, not the whole quest line.
Does the Dark Arisen DLC lock me out of base game quests? No. The expansion thread opens from Brant and runs in parallel. It does not add a new lockout on top of the three base-game gates.
Do I lose my inn saves in the Unmoored World? The transition replaces your ordinary saves with the endgame state, which is why a manual backup beforehand is the only clean way to keep a pre-endgame file.
