Is Dragon's Dogma 2 Co-op? Multiplayer and Pawn Sharing

No. Dragon's Dogma 2 is a single-player game with no co-op campaign, no PvP, and no crossplay. You always play alone as your Arisen, supported by up to three AI Pawns. The closest thing to multiplayer is hiring other players' Pawns through the Rift and letting your own Pawn fight in their worlds.

  • Capcom's own framing: "Alone but together: Company in your single-player experience."
  • You can party with up to 2 Pawns created by other players, but never a second human-controlled Arisen.
  • Pawn hiring is platform-locked, so there is no crossplay, and progress does not move between systems.

Is Dragon's Dogma 2 Co-op? The Short Answer

No version of the game, from the March 2024 launch through the Dark Arisen expansion, ships with cooperative play. The only borrowed human element is the Pawn system: companions designed and leveled by other people, run by AI on your machine.

Mode Supported What that means in practice
Online co-op campaign No No second Arisen, no shared session, no friend-controlled character
Local or split-screen co-op No Single-player only on PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam
PvP, invasions, or duels No No competitive or player-versus-player systems of any kind
Crossplay No Online Pawn hiring requires both players on the same platform
Cross-save or cross-progression No Progress stays on the platform where you started
Pawn sharing Yes Hire Pawns built by other players and let yours travel to their worlds
Official Pawns Yes Capcom's own curated roster, added to the Rift on October 9, 2026
The official wording matters here

Capcom never markets a multiplayer mode. It markets a single-player adventure that is meant to feel social through Pawns, and the store description repeats that line word for word.

Why Capcom Built It as a Single-Player Game

The series has always been solo, and the mechanical reason is simple: the Pawn system is the co-op substitute. Instead of a second human, you get companions who develop personalities, learn quest knowledge from other players' worlds, and comment on the journey.

Capcom's description puts it plainly: Pawns turn the game into "an adventure so unique you will feel as if accompanied by other players while on your own adventure." The official SYSTEM page adds that a mixed Pawn team "lends a sense of multiplayer community to this single-player adventure."

The Dark Arisen expansion did not change the model. Its official store description lists three additions: the Norgan region in the snowy north with the character Eir and relic appraisal, the Lost Rites set of 12 dungeon challenges, and new character-creator options. Multiplayer is not on that list.

How Pawn Sharing Works: Multiplayer Without the Multiplayer

Pawn sharing is the feature most people mistake for co-op.

  1. You create two permanent characters: your Arisen and your main Pawn. The main Pawn always travels with you and cannot be removed.
  2. Each town has a Riftstone. Approach one and open the Rift to browse Pawns created by other players.
  3. You may hire up to 2 additional Pawns through the network, giving a party of up to four: your Arisen plus three Pawns.
  4. Both players must be on the same platform for an online hire. There is no crossplay layer connecting PC to consoles.
  5. Pawns already present in the world can be hired even while offline, so the system never blocks a single-player session.
  6. Hiring a Pawn does not require PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass Core.
Party slot Who controls it Where it comes from
Arisen You Your own character, always solo
Main Pawn You create it, the AI runs it Yours permanently, hired out to other players
Hired Pawn 1 Another player created it, your AI runs it The Rift, up to 2 slots
Hired Pawn 2 Another player created it, your AI runs it The Rift, up to 2 slots

Your main Pawn is the reciprocal part. While you play, other Arisens can hire it, and it returns with Rift Crystals, new knowledge, and occasionally a gift. That knowledge shows up as quest hints and map guidance in your own game, which is why a well-traveled Pawn behaves differently from a fresh one. Inclinations, specializations, and command behavior are covered in depth in our Pawn guide to inclinations and specializations.

One side effect worth knowing: because Pawns literally cross between worlds, they also carry the Dragonsplague condition. Our Dragonsplague guide covers the symptoms and the cure before an infected Pawn hurts your town.

Official Pawns: Capcom's Own Roster in the Rift

With the Dark Arisen launch on October 9, 2026, Capcom added Official Pawns: a curated roster built for well-known players and streamers, hired from a dedicated menu in the Rift rather than the general pool.

The official page lists how they differ from a normal Pawn.

Trait Official Pawns
Name display Shown in a different color so they stand out in the list
Hire cost up to level 10 Free, with no Rift Crystal cost
Equipment Locked; you cannot change their gear once hired
Rankings Excluded from daily and overall ranking features
Availability Some are limited-time and disappear after a set window

The roster lists each owner, Arisen, nickname, and vocation, and entries carry availability windows; one runs to October 8, 2027.

A level 10 Official Pawn costs nothing to hire, which makes them cheap early-party filler, but some roster entries expire.

Rift Crystals and What Hiring Actually Costs

Rift Crystals are the currency attached to the Pawn system. Capcom's own store copy confirms their purpose: Rift Crystals "can be used to hire pawns or purchase special items." They also drop from forgotten riftstones and defeated monsters.

The practical hiring rule most players work from is community-documented rather than officially published: Pawns at or below your Arisen's level are free to hire, while Pawns above your level cost Rift Crystals that scale with the gap. Treat that as a working rule, since exact costs are unpublished and can shift with updates.

Build a Pawn worth renting

Rift Crystals mostly flow to you when someone else hires your main Pawn, so keep its gear, skills, and inclination updated. A neglected Pawn sits unrented.

Pawns are stored inside your platform save, so the save location and backup guide is the right place to look if a hire list behaves oddly after a restart.

Crossplay and Cross-Save: What Is Missing

Two connected features are absent, and players ask about them constantly. The official page states the first outright: "To hire Pawns from other online players, both players must be playing on the same platform." That sentence is also the crossplay answer. A PC player cannot rent a PS5 Pawn, and an Xbox or Switch 2 owner cannot see Steam's pool.

Feature Status Detail
Crossplay Not supported Pawn hiring is same-platform only
Cross-save Not supported No account link or transfer tool between systems
Cross-progression Not supported Unlocks and story progress stay on the original platform
Same-platform cloud backup Supported Handled by Steam, PS5, Xbox, and Switch 2 separately

The full breakdown lives in our cross-save support page. To keep your Pawns and your Arisen, stay on the platform where you made them.

PC Mods That Add Co-op: DD2gether

If you specifically want to fight next to a real person, the only route is a player-made mod on PC. The project most often cited is DD2gether, a community-made network co-op mod that aims to put up to 4 players into one world, each controlling their own Arisen with synchronized Pawns and monsters.

Be blunt about its state: DD2gether is a work-in-progress community project with no connection to Capcom, it lives on Nexus Mods, and it has been shown in preview videos rather than as a finished, stable release. Enthusiast coverage describes it as turning the game into an open-world Monster Hunter.

Community co-op mods are unofficial and fragile

DD2gether is not supported by Capcom, changes your game files, and can break after an official Title Update. Back up your save first, and keep a clean install if you value your current run. Installing mods to play together is a risk you take knowingly.

Mods are a PC-only path, so hardware and settings matter more than usual. Our PC system requirements and settings guide covers what you need to run the game smoothly before stacking anything on top.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Dragon's Dogma 2 co-op? No. There is no cooperative mode in any version, including after the Dark Arisen expansion. It is a single-player action-RPG.

Can I play Dragon's Dogma 2 with my friend? Not as a shared session. The closest option is hiring your friend's Pawn, which requires the same platform. On PC, a mod like DD2gether is the only true co-op path.

Does Dragon's Dogma 2 have multiplayer at all? It has asynchronous Pawn sharing: you borrow AI companions other players created. That is online, but not co-op.

Why do other players' Pawns show up in my game? Because Pawn sharing is the game's social layer. You hire Pawns from the Rift, and your own Pawn can be hired by strangers who then send it back with knowledge and Rift Crystals.

Do I need PlayStation Plus or Game Pass to hire Pawns? No. Official materials state that hiring Pawns does not require a PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass Core membership, and offline hiring is supported too.

Is there a co-op mod for Dragon's Dogma 2? Yes, on PC. DD2gether is the best-known community network co-op project, targeting up to 4 players. It is unofficial, work-in-progress, and can break after patches.
