Pawn Guide: Inclinations, Orienteer & Commands

Your Pawn setup comes down to three choices: an inclination (Kindhearted, Calm, Simple, or Straightforward) that shapes combat behavior, one specialization such as Chirurgeon or Logistician, and six commands including the newer Explore and High Five. Title Update 4.0 added the Orienteer specialization alongside the Dark Arisen launch, though Capcom has not yet detailed what it does.

Pawn Inclinations at a Glance

There are four inclinations, chosen when you enter the covenant with your main Pawn. Each one changes speech patterns and the actions the Pawn favors, though all Pawns serve the Arisen faithfully regardless of choice.

Inclination Battlefield Behavior Habits and Speech Best Suited For
Kindhearted Prioritizes support: holds down foes, casts beneficial enchantments, stays by your side Loyal, dutiful, attentive to allies in need Support Mage main Pawns
Calm Favors defense and evasion, uses clever tactics; discards unneeded items from its pack on its own Strategic, shrewd, efficient Sorcerer, Archer, and ranged DPS Pawns
Simple Focuses on gathering items and examining surroundings; often gifts finds to companions Earnest, curious, generous Explorer and material-farming Pawns
Straightforward Rushes headlong into battle, spots enemies from afar, tackles even large monsters Bold, candid, impulsive Fighter, Warrior, and physical DPS Pawns

The table above paraphrases the official manual, the only reliable description of each inclination. Exact aggression values have never been published by Capcom, so treat community numbers with skepticism.

Which Inclination Should You Pick?

There is no single best inclination. Community testing since launch has converged on role-based defaults worth following unless you have a specific plan.

  • Frontline tank (Fighter or Warrior): Straightforward. You want the Pawn charging monsters and drawing attention, not hanging back. Most hire-board tanks run this.
  • Support Mage: Kindhearted. A support Mage already wants to stay near the Arisen and cast enchantments and heals, which is exactly what Kindhearted reinforces. Pair it with Chirurgeon for a dedicated medic.
  • Damage Mage or Archer: Calm. Community testing suggests Calm Pawns manage stamina better and position more carefully, which suits casters that die when caught out of position.
  • Simple: only for a purpose-built explorer. Simple Pawns wander toward gathering spots mid-fight, which annoys many players. It earns its slot on a Forager Pawn used for material runs, not on a hired damage dealer.
Hiring rule of thumb

Check the inclination of any Pawn before you hire it. You can only change your own main Pawn, so a hired Pawn with the wrong inclination stays wrong for the whole contract.

These recommendations match the vocation rankings on our Best Vocations Tier List for Dark Arisen (2026).

How to Change Your Pawn Inclination

Only your main Pawn can change inclination, using Rift Incense at a campsite with a camping kit. Community wiki guides report the incenses are sold by Neomith in the Vernworth Pawn Guild near the Grand Riftstone, with the price cut from 2,000 RC to 750 RC after launch. An Ambivalent Rift Incense randomizes the inclination once and is sold as a small paid item on Steam.

Steps:

  1. Buy the Rift Incense matching the inclination you want.
  2. Rest at any campsite with a camping kit in your inventory.
  3. Use the incense on your main Pawn while camping.

Changing appearance and voice is a separate process covered in How to Change Appearance.

All Pawn Specializations Explained

A Pawn can hold exactly one specialization at a time, and learning a new one replaces the old. The official manual warns they are not strictly beneficial, since they let the Pawn act on its own initiative in ways that can surprise you. Each is taught through befriending NPCs out in the world.

Specialization Effect Verdict
Chirurgeon Pawn uses curatives on the Arisen and allies on its own initiative Best general pick, especially on support Mages
Forager Pawn marks enhancement-material locations on the map Great with the Simple inclination for farming runs
Logistician Pawn combines materials and moves items between allies' packs Convenient but can auto-combine items you wanted to keep
Woodland Wordsmith Pawn interprets Elvish for the Arisen Situational, mainly for the Sacred Arbor and elven quests
Hawker Pawn offers to buy a selection of items from your inventory for gold Pure convenience, no combat value
Aphonite Pawn stays silent except under very select circumstances For players tired of Pawn chatter
Guardian Pawn prevents oxcart raids and reduces campsite raids Nice quality of life for overland travel
Orienteer Added in Title Update 4.0; Capcom has published no effect description yet Wait for official details before building around it

For new players, Chirurgeon on a Kindhearted Mage remains the safest default. Veterans farming Norgan materials tend to prefer a Simple Forager that pings every deposit, as covered in our 15 Beginner Tips Before Entering Norgan.

What Is the Orienteer Specialization?

Orienteer is the new Pawn specialization added in Title Update 4.0 on October 9, 2026, alongside the Dark Arisen launch. That is all Capcom has confirmed: the official update page lists "Added Orienteer specialization" as a single line with no description.

Do not build around Orienteer yet

Community threads are guessing it helps with navigation or map awareness, but no in-game testing had confirmed its effect as of October 10, 2026. Check back after the effect is documented rather than spending resources chasing the tome blind.

The same 4.0 patch tripled the Rift Crystals from forgotten riftstones from 30 to 90, with retroactive top-ups for stones you already touched. That change is confirmed on the official update page and summarized in our Patch Notes: Title Update 4.0 and DLC Changes.

Pawn Commands: Go, To Me, Help, Wait, Explore, High Five

The Arisen has six commands, and their effects shift between combat and exploration. Title Update 3.2 added the two long-press commands, Explore and High Five, toggleable in Options under Game Settings.

Command Input Effect
Go! Tap the Go button Pawns act independently; in combat they spread across the battlefield; while exploring they interact with chests, mechanisms, and gathering spots in the faced direction
To me! Tap the To me button Pawns approach and fight by your side
Wait! Tap the Wait button Pawns hold position; in combat they stop attacking and support indirectly
Help! Tap the Help button Pawns prioritize support, healing, and recovery
Explore! Hold the Go button Pawns proactively scatter to gather materials
High five! Hold the To me button Pawns come over for a high five; purely social, can be disabled

Two details from the manual deserve emphasis. Using Go right after a Pawn makes a suggestion tells it to follow through, whether that means guiding you somewhere or helping with a task. And in combat, Wait means stop attacking and play support, which is the fastest way to get a chaotic fight back under control.

Dragonsplague Changes in 3.2 and 4.0

Dragonsplague still punishes players who ignore their Pawns' condition, but Title Update 3.2 made it far more manageable. The patch added the Dragonsbaulk Draught, a dedicated cure, plus a tutorial explaining it. Afflicted Pawns also display new combat behaviors, which makes the condition easier to spot before it escalates.

Full symptoms, the keep-or-cure decision, and treatment live in our Dragonsplague Guide: Symptoms, Buffs and Cure. Keep a spare Draught in storage the way you stock camping kits.

FAQ

What is the best Pawn inclination in Dragon's Dogma 2? There is no universal best. Straightforward is the safest default for physical damage dealers and tanks, Kindhearted suits support Mages, and Calm fits ranged casters. Simple is a specialist pick for farming builds.

What does the Orienteer specialization do? Unknown as of October 10, 2026. Capcom announced only the name in the Title Update 4.0 notes with no effect description.

How many specializations can a Pawn have? One. Learning a new specialization replaces the old one, so choose between Chirurgeon, Logistician, Forager, and the rest deliberately.

Can I change a hired Pawn's inclination? No. Rift Incense works only on your main Pawn. When hiring, filter for the inclination and specialization you want instead of hoping to fix them later.

Is High Five just cosmetic? Yes. It is a social interaction added in Title Update 3.2 with no combat effect, and it can be toggled off in Options.
